<h2 class="remove-whitespace"> Introduction </h2>
Images of the future in an increasingly technologized world have a long tradition and have always fascinated people. Science fiction movies and books with their visions and outlooks on a fantastic future with intelligent machines enjoy great popularity.The more technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) advance, the more realistic these visions become. Scenarios of what our digital future could look like, however, also trigger certain fears. What will everyday life on the edge of a technological singularity look like? Will we humans still be independent living beings or controlled by machines or robots?
As part of my master's thesis in Business Informatics, I wrote an interactive story on the topic of caring for the elderly in the future. While reading the scenario you are confronted with various decisions that change the course of the story. The story is divided into three phases. The first phase begins in 2020 and ends 15 years later, followed by the second phase, which lasts another 15 years. The last stage starts in 2050 and leads near to the end of life. At the beginning of each stage you will get a short introduction about how the world looks like at that time. Please note that you cannot undo decisions you have made, i.e. you cannot jump back ... so chose wisely.

In the fictional story, in which you will soon be immersed, a variety of technologies are emerging. I assume that any technology that is available today or will be available in the future will be used. Information and communication technology in general and especially Artificial Intelligence will continue to develop rapidly. The resulting tools and applications that will be widely available to us in the future will also be used for the care of the elderly.

<tr>
<td>Smart Home/ AAL</td>
<td>In a smart home, all electrical devices are connected and communicate with each other via a central control unit. These intelligent technologies enable automated sequences of technical processes in living spaces. From the refrigerator to the oven, from the shower to the sun blinds, everything is controlled or automated according to the situation in the daily routine. Many of these technologies can be used in different ways. The table below describes how they are used for the story </td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Smart watch</td>
<td>In the future, smart watches will not only record trivial information such as pulse and steps, but will be able to do much more. I imagine here a development to a diagnostic computer that can accurately record the current state of health of the wearer.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Language assistant</td>
<td>Siri and Alexa are known to us from our smartphones. Soon many more devices will be equipped with a voice assistant. Where we still press switches or buttons today, a shout will soon be enough.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Exoskeleton</td>
<td>Artificial, mechanical exoskeletons are mechanical structures supported by the human body. They are also known as robot suits. In medicine, orthoses have been in use for some time. Exoskeletons are developing into robots or machines worn on the body, which support or reinforce the movements of the wearer</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Autonomous vehicles</td>
<td>Autonomous vehicles are objects that can operate without human crew. Today we know only partially autonomous vehicles such as cars with traffic assistance or remote-controlled drones. It is assumed that in the future they will no longer need human activity to move around.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Microchips</td>
<td>Microchips are tiny, highly complex microelectronic platelets. They serve as an interface and transfer data to an external device. These tiny platelets can be placed inside objects or under the skin to measure valuable data. </td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Virtual Reality (VR)</td>
<td>VR is the representation and simultaneous perception of reality and its physical properties in a real-time computer-generated, interactive virtual environment. A virtual trip to the "Grand Canyon" can perhaps even be more relaxing than a strenuous and environmentally unfriendly trip to the USA. A Virutal Reality Room, which brings real experiences even without glasses, is called Holodeck.</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>Humanoid robot</td>
<td>A humanoid robot is a highly developed machine whose construction is based on the human form. Robot technology and especially the progress in Artificial Intelligence will enable robots to provide human assistance in all situations (e.g. nursing).</td>

(link-goto: "back", (history:)'s last)It is now a little more than five years since you finished your work and retired. At first you had some trouble with it, because you actually liked going to work and you found it fulfilling. But in the meantime you have gotten used to it and have also learned to appreciate the beautiful things of the pension. You can invest more time in things for which there was often no time before. (set: _H1 to $exampleCharacter's H1) (set: _H2 to $exampleCharacter's H2) (set: _H3 to $exampleCharacter's H3) (set: _H4 to $exampleCharacter's H4)
You take time for your hobbies (_H1, _H2, _H3, _H4), see your family regularly and meet with friends for coffee. In addition, you take the time to cook fresh food as often as possible or go out for a good meal. You also often take long walks in the nearby forest.
Over the years this initial euphoria has diminished somewhat. You still like to cook often, but sometimes you just need a ready meal to warm up. Also your walks become a bit shorter, because you just don't like to walk that long anymore.
For the last few months you have had days when you are not feeling so well. You feel very tired, have no appetite and feel generally unwell. Just as quickly as these days come, they are gone again.
[[continue|2020-2]]It is a sunny Sunday in spring and you are visiting your family for brunch . You extremely enjoy these hours in the garden together and love to watch your grandchildren play. In such moments of happiness you hope that your time will never end and that you can watch your great-grandchildren grow up.
Suddenly you are torn from your thoughts and your daughter sits down with you. You talk for a long time about the events of the last weeks. Then you also tell her about your bad days. She is worried and asks you to check this with the doctor. Reluctantly you promise to call her tomorrow.
Only one week later you can make your appointment with Dr. Fuhrer. In the practice you describe your problems to the doctor. He suggests that you have a health check-up that is designed for seniors. This check-up allows to detect weaknesses and illnesses related to old age early on.
Only one week later you will receive a call from the doctor to inform you about the results of the examination.
[[continue|2020-3]](set: _Name to $exampleCharacter's Name)
//"Hello (if: $exampleCharacter's Geschlecht is "m") [Mr ] (else:) [Ms ] _Name. The examination has shown that your body reacts to an inadequate diet and also the ever decreasing amount of exercise has led to increased cholesterol levels. To prevent cardiovascular disease it is highly recommended to do something about it."//
The doctor makes the following suggestions:
(link-reveal-goto: "Option 1", "2020-Option1")[(set: $decisionTree's 2020O1 to "yes")] <!-- [[ "Option 1 1"|2020-Option1]] -->
//"You will receive a food plan from us. On this plan you will find food which is good for you and which you should avoid. You can then decide for yourself how you want to use these foods and what recipes you prepare with them. I also advise you to go for walks more often. Exercise is very important. On your next visit I will show you some exercises that you should do regularly at home. I will also prescribe you a medication to be taken daily to lower your cholesterol level. You will then come every two months for a check-up appointment."//
(link-reveal-goto: "Option 2", "2020-Option2")[(set: $decisionTree's 2020O2 to "yes")] <!-- [[ "Option 1"|2020-Option2]] -->
//"You register on a website where you can create a profile. On the basis of specific questions, you will then be offered foods or recipes that are good for you. You can also exchange ideas with other people and publish recipes. In addition, you will be shown suggestions on how to keep fit and live workout sessions will be offered. To measure your fitness you will receive a fitness tracker in the form of a watch and a chest strap. This is directly connected to the tool, so the data is transferred.
The remaining data about your nutrition and your daily well-being are entered manually. This way your overall health can be monitored. This enables you to give direct feedback and to react quickly in case of abnormalities. The dosage of the medication can also be continuously adjusted to your needs.
This is a pilot project that was started in collaboration with the University of Zurich. The evaluation of the data is based on an algorithm that learns and can therefore make increasingly precise evaluations. Thanks to this technology, you only need to visit us once a year."//You have chosen the first option. So not much will change in your daily routine. You pay attention to your nutrition plan and go for walks more regularly again. You take the prescribed medication, but it can also happen that you forget to take it.
Some time passes and more and more often you lack the energy to cook and eat according to your plan. Convenience meals help you to prepare something that is quick and tastes good.
Your next doctor's appointment is coming up and you are a little worried. You notice that you are not so physically fit anymore and that everyday things are becoming more and more difficult. As expected, this is also reflected in your blood values. The irregular taking of the tablets, the poor diet and the lack of exercise have caused your cholesterol level to rise.
You describe this situation to your family and they are worried. They think about what they can do and make the following suggestions:
(link-reveal-goto: "Caretaker", "2020-Vorschlag1")[(set: $decisionTree's 2020O11 to "yes")]
From now on, a caregiver will come to your home several times a week to help you. She will go shopping with you or do the shopping for you, cook your meals and check that you have taken your medication.

<!-- [[ "Suggestion 1"|2020-Vorschlag1]] -->You enter your data regularly in the tool and can follow your progress a bit. You like to try out new recipes that you find in the blog and exchange ideas with other participants via chat.
One day your phone rings and Dr. Fuhrer is on the line. He asks you to come to the practice for a talk.
//"(set: _Name to $exampleCharacter's Name) (if: $exampleCharacter's Geschlecht is "m")[Mr ] (else:) [Ms ] _Name Your data has shown that you have developed type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, it is too late to treat this early. You need to start insulin therapy."//

The capsule dissolves in the stomach acid and a three-arm injector is released. This is anchored in the small intestine and releases the insulin. This procedure is completely painless for the patient. The second solution is somewhat more expensive, but is fully covered by health insurance."//
The help you get is good for you. Your cholesterol level remains stable thanks to the medication. However, other age-related weaknesses are gradually becoming apparent. It happens more and more often that you forget appointments with friends or doctor's appointments. Last week you even forgot to lock your door. Mrs. Gonzales, your nurse has pointed this out to you. Although these events scare you a little, you don't like to talk about them.
On a Monday afternoon, you get up to go for a long walk. It is nice weather outside and you go to the nearby forest, as you almost always do. You like to walk there because there are not many people and you are well protected from the sun.
After a while you pass a crossroads and think to yourself: "haven't I been here before? You look around and want to recognize where you are. Somehow everything looks familiar, but you do not know exactly where you are. You just decide to go back the way you came, but you don't know where you are. Slowly you get a little scared. You sit down on a bench at the edge of the forest and try to reflect. But even that does not help. You get panic. "How do I get home? It will be dark in a few hours!"
After what feels like an eternity, a young lady finally comes along. You look at her helplessly and she asks you if she can help you. You explain the situation to her and give her your address. Responsible she brings you to your front door. You are infinitely grateful to her and go to bed a little disturbed and totally tired. You have promised your "savior" to discuss this incident with your doctor.

//"But you can also do these tasks easily from home alone. For this purpose you would be given a tablet, which provides new puzzles every day. This also serves as a monitoring tool for us, as we can see the data of your activities. You will also receive a Smartwatch with a GPS. You must always wear this, especially when you leave the house. With this your location can be tracked. It also has an emergency button which you can press in such cases as on your last walk.
There are also some smart gadgets that are specially adapted for seniors (AAL). One of them is a Smart Fridge, which can measure which food is in the fridge and which has to be bought later. It also reports when something is about to expire. Sensors help you not to forget to switch off the light or the stove."//
You now receive visits from a caregiver almost on a daily basis. She takese care of shopping, cooking, cleaning, etc. Unfortunately you are not completely satisfied with her. It happens more and more often that she forgets something and her cooking skills do not suit you. You have often pointed this out to her, but nothing changes. You are annoyed an call your daughter:

//"This can't go on like this, I don't want a caregiver anymore! I rather want the Smart Gadgets to support me!"//
Your gadgets work well and you have become good friends with them. They support you where you need it. You also like to do the puzzles on your tablet regularly. Only the Smartwatch bothers you a bit. It is too uncomfortable for you and therefore you take it off when you sleep. It can happen that you forget to put it on again the next day.
When you meet your family, your daughter becomes aware of that and asks you why you do not wear your Smartwatch. You describe the situation to her and explain why you have forgotten to put it on. "But (if: $exampleCharacter's Geschlecht is "m") [daddy ] (else:) [mum ], what if you can't find your way home again and don't wear it? Maybe next time you won't be lucky enough to have someone to help you! We really have to find a solution!"
She immediately starts looking for other possibilities that could replace the functions of the Smartwatch. In the process, she discovers two new technologies:
(link-reveal-goto: "Microsensors in other objects", "2035-Vorschlag-2")[(set: $decisionTree's 2035V3 to "yes")] <!-- [[Technologie 1|2035-Vorschlag-2]] -->
Sensors can be used in other objects that you carry with you every day. For example, a necklace, glasses or a piece of clothing. This has the advantage that you don't have to remember it because you wear it anyway and it is not disturbing.
(link-reveal-goto: "Microchip under the skin", "2035-Vorschlag-2")[(set: $decisionTree's 2035V4 to "yes")] <!-- [[Technologie 2|2035-Vorschlag-2]] -->
Microchips with GPS and other functions can easily be placed under the skin. So you don't have to think about anything and measurements can be taken at night.
After a few years, it becomes apparent that insulin therapy does not work well for you. You get more and more complaints, have lost a lot of weight, feel a constant thirst and often feel very tired. You also show nerve damage in your feet.
Many other treatment attempts are of no use either. The doctor comes to the conclusion that the nerve tracts in your foot no longer heal and that it must therefore be amputated.
A few weeks before your operation you have to make an important decision:
(link-reveal-goto: "Wheelchair", "Transit 2035")[(set: $decisionTree's 2020V21 to "yes")]<!-- [[Wheelchair|Transit 2035]] -->
You can use a wheelchair after your operation. You can use it in your everyday life and make longer journeys without effort. It is a power wheelchair, which makes moving around very easy for you. In addition, you will be given crutches, which you can use at home for shorter distances.
(link-reveal-goto: "Exoskeleton", "Transit 2035")[(set: $decisionTree's 2020V22 to "yes")]<!-- [[Exoskeleton|Transit 2035]] -->
You have an exoskeleton made which completely replaces your foot. You can put it on in the morning and go through your daily routine almost like before.
<p style="text-align:center;"><img src="http://ageing.digitalfutures.ch/ekso-042914-3921a1-e1493401772518.jpg" height="300"></p>
You have chosen a wheelchair. But this decision also brings some changes with it. Your current living situation is not wheelchair friendly and something has to change.
(link-reveal-goto: "Retirement Home", "2035-Option-3")[(set: $decisionTree's 2035V5 to "yes")] <!-- [[Technologie 1|2035-Option-3]] -->

Stairs and other obstacles are no longer a big problem for you. Nevertheless, everything takes a little longer and often it is not worth the effort for you to go outside.
So you meet less and less with your friends and family. Your environment notices your slight limitation and wants to offer you help in everyday life with the following suggestions:
(link-reveal-goto: "Technics", "2035-1.2")[(set: $decisionTree's 2035V2 to "yes")]<!-- [[Technik|2035-1.2]] -->
Your living area will be equipped with many smart gadgets. These make your everyday life easier by allowing you to control them centrally on your tablet. (link-reveal-goto: "Caretaker", "2035-1.1")[(set: $decisionTree's 2035V1 to "yes")] <!-- [[Pflegeperson|2035-1.1]] -->
From now on, a caregiver will help you. She will visit you several times a week, take over strenuous work and accompany you to shopping or going for a walk.
<h2 class="remove-whitespace">Stage 2 - Year 2035</h2>
<b>Your current age: 85 years</b>
The pension fund problem has worsened further and contributions are no longer sufficient to finance pensioners. A small compensation could be achieved by raising the retirement age to 66 years. In addition, there are more and more people who have reached retirement age, but still continue to work. This is possible up to the age of 70. Nevertheless, pensions have been cut dramatically and a large part of the provision is financed by the pensioners' own savings.
The prices of care places in old people's homes have risen extremely, as the number of caregivers is no longer sufficient to provide for the many people in need of care. Such places are therefore in great demand and many can no longer afford this luxury. For this reason, new forms of living for senior citizens have emerged. For example, residential communities for the elderly or apartments equipped with technical gadgets. Also Spitex or other 7x24 hours home care are offers which only few can afford.
Also in the field of technology a lot has changed. Many ideas, which became known as concepts a few years ago, are now being put into practice. Thanks to much larger and faster computers, the processing of huge amounts of data is commonplace. All large companies work with Big Data and thus enable completely new customer experiences. This trend also makes it possible to evaluate personal data such as state of health, movement times or even thought processes. A lot has also happened in the field of robotics and machine learning. Robots look and behave more and more like humans. Nevertheless, the technology has not yet reached the point where it can work at eye level with humans. In order to achieve this so-called strong artificial intelligence, several years of training are still needed. In addition, legal and moral questions arise. The permanent monitoring that goes hand in hand with the use of technology in care for the elderly is causing skepticism.<h2 class="remove-whitespace">Stage 1 - Year 2020</h2>
<b>Your current age: 70 years</b>
Thanks to many years of economic and political stability, prosperity in the Western world has been steadily increasing. This has affected society as we know it today in many ways. The good, balanced and above all sufficient nutrition, the lower physical strain caused by our work, a wide range of leisure activities and above all enough free time to take advantage of it, the modern body awareness and last but not least the versatile supplementary nutrition allow us not only to get older but to maintain fitness at an advanced age.
It is a fact that the average age of the population is constantly increasing. The consequences of this development cannot be denied. For several years now it has been a major issue how the pensions of the ageing population can be financed in the future.
Searching for solutions to lower the costs for care of the elderly and senior citizens in the immediate future, state-of-the-art technologies move into the picture. One day you take a shower while the nurse prepares lunch. Suddenly you lose your balance and fall down. Quickly she rushes to the bathroom and wants to help you get up. But her strength is not enough and she calls an ambulance. Luckily you didn't hurt yourself very badly! Nevertheless, this event is shocking for you, your family and for her. You must always wear this, especially when you leave the house. With this, your location can be tracked. It also has an emergency button which you can press in such cases as on your last walk.
There are also some smart gadgets that are specially adapted for seniors (AAL). For example a smart fridge which can measure which food is in the fridge and which has to be bought later. It also reports when something is about to expire. Sensors help you not to forget to switch off the light or the stove. ]

You are now well connected. Your data is always transmitted and controlled. Despite this, you often feel tired and somewhat limited by this. Your environment notices this and wants to make you happy. They visit you at your home and bring you VR glasses. <h2 class="remove-whitespace">Stage 3 - Year 2050</h2>
<b>Your current age: 100 years</b>
Demographic change has developed as expected, with around 27% of the Swiss population over the age of 65. Thanks to medicines and ever-improving nutritional supplements, average life expectancy is around 90 years. Many people also reach a proud age of well over 100 years. A long, carefree and self-determined life has increasingly become reality. This is mainly due to medicine, but also to technology.
Places in nursing homes are becoming increasingly scarce and more and more technology is being used for care. Robots similar to humans take over work from the nursing staff and are also part of everyday life in other areas. As a result, human caregivers have become extremely rare and expensive. Only a few senior citizens can afford this "luxury".
In companies, there are often four generations who have to work together leading to many opportunities but also some challenges.
Basically, we are in an age in which anything is possible on a technical level. Quantum computers, holograms, drones and autonomous vehicles are part of everyday life. Living together with human-like robots has become more and more established. Data of all kinds are collected, often unnoticed by us, and evaluated in nanoseconds.
Many new laws have been introduced to regulate the application of technologies in recent years. However, technologies are developing faster than legislation. By no means all situations are regulated and moral questions remain unanswered.

From now on, a caregiver will help you. She will visit you several times a week, take over strenuous work and accompany you to shopping or going for a walk.
Over the years the world has changed and especially the situation in the care of senior citizens has changed a lot. The technical aids are now standard and have therefore become cheaper and cheaper. Robots are no longer simply machines with limited applications, but have become equal to humans in almost all respects.
Everything that can be done by robots and machines (and that is practically everything) is affordable while everything that has to be done by human hands has become extremely cost-intensive. This development has also had a great influence on the care of the elderly. One of the most sought-after places has just become available and thanks to an acquaintance you could have it. So you can enjoy your last years with human care, but you can't leave anything to your descendants.
